ESAY DU JEAN VALJEAN
In the book Les Miserable,
Jean Valjean began his journey viewed as a criminal. He wanted his sister and
her children to eat but went to prison for years and they forget about him. Later,
in the book the author talks about his journey after prison.
Jean Valjean is a dynamic character because throughout
meeting people like the bishop he realized he had no motive to be the same
person he was before. In the book eh has a big impact on him that truly changes
him.
All Jean Valjean wanted was to be a
changed man and not a “criminal” hat everyone thought; so, he did. People
thought that since he made a mistake and become a criminal, that he would be
that way all his life. Jean Valjean had made so many generous deeds and asked
for nothing in return, they people wanted to make him mayor. It all came to him
having to be the mayor and going around giving money to those in need, and his
only reason for all he did was because of the bishop. The bishop did not question
him when he arrived at the church nor did he think he would steal. So, when the
bishop saw him get caught stealing, he let him go and made him promise that he
would change, and he did.
Jean Valjean then made a promise to a
woman named Fantine that he would take care of her daughter. He had met her
outside while getting arrested, he then got her out. Fantine had no idea why he
took her out, but he offered her a place and helped her. She had gotten sick,
so he wanted to fulfill her promise and get her child there with her before she
died. Fantine had left her daughter Cosette with a family because she couldn’t care
for her. The Thenardiers had been greedy with Fantine because they’d ask for money
for them and not her daughter, Fantine had no idea she was being treated badly.
Jean Valjean then went and bought Cosette from the family.
After going to the Thenardiers and getting
Cosette to take care of, they had a long Journey on the way. Since her mother
had passed away, he had taken the role of her father. They stay in a small room
at first and Cosette had some trouble at first but then got used to not doing
chores or waking up early. Jean Valjean had become an angel to him for rescuing
her, he did not think she would have an impact on him. He had been in trouble,
so he had to stay away from the public, so he had gotten Cosette and had taken
her to a convention with help of a man. They did not let any men go in, so they
got in from the back. From there all he knew is that he would dedicate his life
and time to Cosette. She was his motivation to keep going and be the changed
man he was. Jean Valjean was also motivated to keep his promise to Cosette
which was to take care of her and want the best for her.
In conclusion, Jean Valjean is a
dynamic character because in the beginning he was viewed as a criminal and people
judged him off that. After prison he had an impact from the bishop who knew he
was know as a criminal but thought otherwise. He then promised the bishop he would
change. In the beginning of his journey after prison he had a much bigger
impact and that was Cosette, when he met her and after what they went through
all he wants his to take care of her and she was his motivation to be the way
he is.
