LES MISERABLES - Final Essay

A character that is dynamic would be someone who has a good/bad personality at the beginning of the book; then has a change throughout the book. A dynamic character from the book would be Jean Valjean. He is a dynamic character because he had not had much money to feed his sister and her family after her husband had left her. Jean did not want her kids to starve even though they went behind their mother's back and get food without her knowing. He did want any person wold do for their family to eat; he stole bread. Throughout the book, Jean Valjean had changed a lot. When he was in prison, after getting caught stealing the bread; he came to a realization that the world was cruel. Jean had tried escaping prison so many times but he didn't succeed. After spending thirteen year being locked up in prison had got tired of trying to get out. Jean had changed and it was different about him. In the book it says, " Jean Valjean entered the alley sobbing and trembling; he left hardened..." What I can understand from that quote in the book, is that Jean had realized the world was truly cruel because he was an innocent man unjustly punished. Jean had become so outraged and hardened. In prison, he was always injured, the only weapon he had was his hatred. The time he spent in prison, he would get beaten up by the other cellmates. Getting hurt by so many people after being charged for a small crime that he sacrificed himself for his family its a hard situation for many people; unlike those people who actually committed a serious crime like murder, it a more serious matter if people like Jean get punished for a small crime. A person can think about anything everyday while being caged up in a cell, which can cause them to go crazy or realize what they went through and become a different person. Jean Valjean had nineteen years of torment and slavery in prison that caused his soul to darken. Years later, after being freed from prison; Jean had walked for days looking for shelter. He had no where to go after his family had forgotten about him when he was put in prison. He arrived at Digne where he met the bishop on a late night. He had been asking the town if they could takehim in and he would pay but they refused to let him in. Later at night, a women had stopped to talk to Jean and told him he should knock at the door where they were sitting across from. ''You should knock there they will let you in'', she said. Jean arrived at the door and he knocked. Jean had been welcomed in the bishop's home. He saw that the bishop had expensive table settings and jewelry from Madmosielle. Jean had awoke one night when he cold not sleep, so he decided to go to the bishop's room. He knew if he made noise the bishop would awake but he went in anyway. Jean had opened the room door and it made noise but the bishop was sound asleep. Jean had found the jewelry and the expensive settings, he went out the door of the room and out the door.

"WRITING ABOUT LIFE AND DEATH "

The katha Upanishad qualifies as an allegory because it has death as a character but it's not really a character just a metaphor, explaining what death may be.  For example, when Yama is talking to Nachiketa he asks him if he would still exist after death. Then Nachiketa doesn't want to tell him because it was a secret . He kept on insisting to know the truth about death . When death appears as a character to explain what happens, it's like a metaphor because it's not really there and no one knows what will happen after death. When our mother gives birth to us she is sentencing us to death. Which is why Yama insisted on wanting to know what will happen after death  .   The other reason it qualifies as an allegory is how Nachiketa symbolizes what's best about being a teenager.
